Pump check: identify faults & prevent breakdowns

Is your pump running unevenly or no longer delivering full performance? Small changes often warn of serious damage. Our expert guide helps you recognise symptoms early and avoid costly consequential damage throughout the system.

Why is water leaking from the pump shaft?

Symptom: water leaking at the shaft (faulty mechanical seal)

How can I recognise it? Visible leakage or limescale between the motor and pump casing.
The cause: Dry running, wear or deposits have damaged the mechanical seal.
Risk: Leaking water can enter the motor bearing or winding, potentially causing complete motor failure.
Our solution: We replace the seal professionally, inspect the shaft surface and, where technically possible, check for leaks in a test run.

Why is the pump losing performance?

Symptom: insufficient pumping capacity

How can I recognise it? The pressure gauge reading falls, or the pump takes considerably longer to deliver the same volume.
The cause: Common causes include a worn impeller (cavitation or abrasion), a blocked suction inlet or an incorrect direction of motor rotation.
Our solution: We test performance, clean the system and repair or replace the impeller.

Is the pump making unusual noises?

Symptom: unusually noisy pump (cavitation or bearings)

How can I recognise it? A crackling sound like gravel inside the pump, or a high-pitched screech.
The cause: Cavitation (vapour bubbles caused by unsuitable operating conditions) or early bearing damage.
Risk: Strong vibrations can quickly destroy mechanical components.
Our solution: We analyse the noise on site or in our workshop, optimise suction conditions and replace bearings to prevent more serious damage.

When is my pump still worth repairing?

This is the key question whenever a fault occurs. We help you decide with a clearcost-effectiveness assessment:

Yes, if: The pump is integrated into complex pipework. Repair avoids costly modifications and adaptations to the existing system.

Yes, if: It is a high-quality branded pump (e.g. Grundfos, KSB or Jung) with an intact casing. Wear parts often cost only a fraction of a new pump.

Conversely, when is repair no longer worthwhile?

Although we can repair almost anything, there are situations where replacing the pump makes better financial sense:

  • Severe casing damage: When severe corrosion, frost damage (cracks) or extreme mechanical damage has compromised the structural integrity of the pump casing.
  • Repair costs exceeding replacement value: When the cost of parts and labour for a standard small pump exceeds the price of a comparable modern replacement.
  • Outdated technology & high electricity consumption: When your old pump is an energy dinosaur. Modern high-efficiency pumps often use up to 80% less energy, so electricity savings can quickly pay for a replacement.
  • Unavailable spare parts: When safety-critical parts can no longer be sourced for an unbranded or particularly unusual model, and custom manufacture would be disproportionately expensive.

Honest advice is our standard: If repair does not make sense for you, we will tell you directly. We can then offer a suitable energy-efficient replacement pump. Transparency and partnership come first.
